Unboxing the AirTag:

When going through the box, you can find three sets of guides;

  1. Warranty Summary
  2. Safety and Handling
  3. Regulatory Compliance Information

You are not responsible for regulatory compliance information.

While it’s worth skimming over these for long-term care, most people are likely eager to jump right into the AirTag itself. As soon as you pull the plastic protective cover off of the AirTag, it will be detected by your iPhone (if you have one in the vicinity) and will prompt you to set it up.

Setting Up Your AirTag:

Setting up on an iPhone is simple as pie:

  • Auto-Prompt: As soon as you peel away the AirTag’s plastic covering, your phone will burst forth about a connection prompt.
  • Naming the AirTag: You’ll see a bunch of default labels such as “Keys,” “Jacket,” “Backpack,” etc., if you want to assign it, or you can simply name it yourself.
  • Apple ID Link: After you name your AirTag, it is attached to your Apple ID and a brief connecting process happens.

Once connected, the location of your AirTag shows up in the “Find My” app. You can then use features such as “Play Sound” to help find the AirTag when you’re near it, or “Find Nearby” to receive precision direction arrows when the tag is within 15 feet of your phone.

Key Features and Usage:

  • Play Sound: When you attach an AirTag to an item and then lose that item, it can play a very loud sound to help you find it.
  • Find Nearby: When you’re within about 15 feet, “Find My” will display an arrow that gives you directions to your AirTag.
  • Sharing with Others: You can share your AirTag with family or friends, who can help track it if it is lost.
  • Lost Mode: Support for this mode, which can be enabled in the Find My app after your AirTag has gone missing, was recently announced. That way if another Apple user finds your AirTag, you can be notified of where it is located.
  • Battery and Water Resistance: The AirTag has a user-replaceable coin battery that will last approximately a year. When it is running low, you’ll receive a notification on your phone. It’s also water-resistant, to 1–1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.

Conclusion:

So the question is, do you want the Apple AirTag? It can save you a lot of time and anxiety, yes, if you lose important things often and you own an iPhone. Overall, the AirTag is a great tracking device — the easy integration with Apple’s Find My network and simple setup add to its convenience. The AirTag has plenty of peace of mind built in, too: With water resistance, a replaceable battery, and an option to allow friends or family access to your tracking info.

In the end, purchase the AirTag only if you regularly need to find everyday items quickly and precisely. Simply attach it to your keys, bag, or anything else you would hate to lose, and you will likely breathe a little easier next time you misplace something.
