With the iconic Land Cruiser 250, Toyota does one better by adding a new 48V mild-hybrid system. This new development, which has been launched in Europe, is designed to deliver improved efficiency and refinement whilst retaining the Defender’s all-terrain ability.
The new MHEV system also couples with the Land Cruiser’s 2.8-liter turbo diesel motor. It comprises an all-new electric motor-generator, small 48V lithium-ion battery, and DC-DC converter.
Drivers enjoy several key advantages of this MHEV system. It allows for smoother acceleration while providing a quieter, cleaner stop-start capability in city driving. When braking and during deceleration, the system is able to recover energy and charge the battery, offering on demand, additional power of 12 kW and 65 Nm of torque to the powertrain. This additional torque is especially advantageous at lower revs and in challenging driving conditions on and off‑road.
The Land Cruiser 250 the hybrid version of which already started to go on sale in some European markets is expected for first customers by the end of 2025. That this truck is adding modern, fuel-efficient technology signifies Toyota’s continued commitment to meeting and exceeding the needs and wishes of its customers with a winning package of rugged luxury.
